Perception, reality, and the path to interdependence.
The missing modeller
Every modern model of reality starts the same way. To be objective, it removes the one doing the modelling. Observer out here. Reality over there. Science runs on that assumption, and so does the conditioning that shapes how each of us sees the world.
But a reality with no one perceiving it can only be imagined. If it existed, nobody could confirm it, because confirming takes awareness. So the perceiver-free world exists in exactly one place: the mind. We built it there, and we live in it as though it were the real one.
A mind that models everything except itself sets up a strange loop. The missing modeller becomes the thing it can never stop searching for. Every answer leaves out the one asking, so no answer closes. That is distorted recursion: a loop with no stable endpoint, because its starting conditions can never be accounted for.
Truth does not need that starting condition. Truth is not a destination you reach and fence off. It is coherence with reality as it is, and reality as it is includes you.
Cut the magnet
Cut a bar magnet in half and you do not get a north piece and a south piece. You get two magnets, each with both poles. A lone pole cannot exist.
Positions behave the same way. Claim a viewpoint as separate from everything else and it calls up its opposite immediately. The two sides stay bound together, but only through opposition. Unity is preserved. The price is conflict.
Not all knowledge does this. Post-and-lintel construction has no counter-movement. Nobody is anti-lintel. It was confirmed in practice, in the open, by everyone who ever stood under a doorway, and it never had to be held as a position. Verified knowledge needs no opponent. Only claimed separation does.
What science actually does
Here is the trick at the root of it. We cannot remove perception, so we simulate its removal. What is true for every observer gets treated as true for no observer. Those are not the same thing. Shared perception is still perception. The perceiver-free condition can never be detected, only imagined.
Mathematics looks like the way out. Precise, reproducible, apparently independent of anyone. Gödel closed that door. Any consistent formal system rich enough to do arithmetic contains truths it cannot prove from inside itself. Its conclusions rest on starting assumptions that minds chose. Even the most exact tool we have cannot hand us a view from outside the whole.
Science works anyway. Not because it got the observer out. Because it combines what many observers record. Replication, shared data, independent measurements pooled together. That is the real engine.
Where it stalls is where the assumption takes over. Physicists agree on the data from quantum experiments. In a century they have not agreed on what it means. Same people, same data, same training. The records pooled. The interpretations never did, because each one is a position, and positions call up opposites.
Recursion, healthy and distorted
Recursion is natural. A fern, a coastline, a river delta: each stage feeds its output back in as the next input, and simple rules build into rich form. In healthy recursion, each turn builds on the integrity of the whole.
Civilization's recursion starts from the false premise instead. Feed the premise back in and the contradiction feeds back with it. Every new framework claims an independence it cannot have, summons its counter, hardens, and breaks. Another framework takes its place, built on the same premise. The names change. The loop does not.
Society runs this loop as consensus. What the majority accepts functions as truth, and authority forms to guard it. Contradicting evidence gets resisted, because contradiction threatens the model, and the model has become an identity. People defend the view as if defending themselves. By then, they are.
Two objections
Doesn't including the perceiver lead to relativism, where every view is equally valid? No. That is where exclusion leads. Including perception does not say every perspective is right. It says there is one shared world, explored from within, and checked by combining what each of us sees. Verification, replication and refinement all survive. They just stop pretending to happen from nowhere.
Isn't science self-correcting? Eventually, and often a generation late. Max Planck noticed that a new idea rarely wins by converting its opponents. It wins when they die. That is not a failure of data. It is identity, bound to a framework, refusing to let the data in.
Know thyself
The belief that perception and reality stand apart is not just a philosophical mistake. It is structural. Built into institutions, it forces the unity it denies to come back as conflict. Each resolution seeds the next fight.
There is nothing external to fix. The pattern of civilization is the sum of every interaction, and every interaction starts from the condition each of us carries. So the change starts there too.
"Know thyself" has been co-opted. It has come to mean adjusting well to a fractured world: all is well if I am well. That is still the line, drawn around one person. Your own situation being good does nothing to stop the cycle. It keeps it running. Whatever worldview you hold, if you hold it from behind the line, the wheel turns.
To know yourself is to know there is no self without relationship. The self cannot exist without the other. Not as an idea. Known at the root. When that changes, every interaction changes, and the whole is put back together. Remembered.
Rumi: "Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself." It reads differently now. Changing yourself is changing the world, because you were never outside it.
The way out
Understanding is not enough. If daily life still runs on the line, the philosophy changes nothing. People need somewhere to live interdependence, practically, as an option to the system they are in now.
Human life depends on a continual flow of value between people. That flow does not need camps or fixed identities. Build for it directly and the pattern can reset. The working name is the Polarity Exchange, and it rests on three pillars.
Accessibility. Everyone can contribute and receive, without gatekeeping by wealth, status or institution.
Coherence. What you give and what you receive are mutually relevant, and balance emerges from the exchange itself, the way an ecosystem balances, not from imposed authority.
Transparency. Every process is visible to every participant, so no authority can position itself inside the network for its own power.
It grows in stages: a community, then prototypes, then a working exchange, then a federation of networks. Its form is found by building it.
Consensus enforced by authority holds people together as opposites. The exchange holds them together through participation, where differences stay differences instead of becoming battlegrounds.
